Following the publication of the Mid-Wales Health Review, Ceredigion’s AM Elin Jones has pressed the Health Minister on what steps he will take to implement Professor Longley’s recommendations relating to Bronglais Hospital and the future of the NHS in rural Wales.

At Health Minister’s questions in the Assembly this week, Elin Jones asked the Government to consider a rapid appointment of a chair of the new ‘Collective’ body to plan services in the area. The creation of this body, which would bring together all three health boards in the area, was one of Professor Longley’s key recommendations.

Elin Jones, local AM for Ceredigion, said:

“The Longley review offers an unique opportunity to place Bronglais and the wider health and social care structure of mid Wales on a firmer foundation. But it’s vital that momentum isn’t lost, which is why I pressed the Minister to consider an early appointment to the chairmanship of the new collective body.

“This role is hugely important, in building bridges between the health boards, and in maintaining the confidence of staff and the wider community in this process.

“I was pleased that the Minister agreed with my position, and that he had discussed the matter with Professor Longley.

“There are candidates who would do fine work in this position. It’s important that the Welsh Government appoints someone with experience and independence to drive through the ambitious agenda set out in the Longley Review.”
