Overwhelming, fantastic, totally crazy - a fundraising day in Cardigan topped all records when over £50k was raised for injured rugby player Dylan Rees.

Hundreds of people turned out to support a charity rugby match and auction at Cardigan Rugby Club on Saturday.

One of the organisers, Rhys Morgan, who became a father to twin girls just last week, said he was "overwhelmed" by the response.

"It was an absolutely fantastic, totally crazy day - I have never witnessed anything like it," said Rhys.

The idea of the match - between a team of former Cardigan Youth team-mates of Dylan and Cardigan RFC President's XV - was formed in June after a bunch of Dylan's mates met at a stag do.

"We felt we wanted to do something for Dylan and as we are all in our 30s felt this would be our last big game," said Rhys.

The idea snowballed with local businesses pledging support and major auction prizes such as foreign holidays and top rugby memorabilia being donated.

Friends of Dylan's jetted in from all over the globe, including Geraint Czech who made a whirlwind visit from Darwin in Australia.

"It just shows the respect and high regard that people have for Dylan and his family," said Rhys.

The money will be used for Dylan's on-going care. He is still in hospital in Cardiff, 18 months after he suffered a head injury in a rugby game. His parents, Graham and Gwen from St Dogmaels, are constantly at his bedside.

"We would like to thank everyone who supported us, there are just too many to mention individually," said Rhys.

"We'd particularly like to thank Cardigan Rugby Club and Ian Gollop who is ill at the moment and was sorely missed on Saturday."
