A petition calling for action to tackle speeding drivers who put children’s lives at risk at Cwmcou, has been handed in to the county council.

Local resident Carolyn Lane collected 117 signatures on the petition, before presenting it to Ceredigion County Council chairman John Adams-Lewis on Monday.

The petition calls for traffic calming measures in the area, and worried locals say many motorists are putting lives in danger by ignoring the 30mph limit signs.

Mrs Lane said a narrow bridge without a pedestrian footway, a blind bend and a steep hill at the junction also contributed to problems in the area.

Residents walking their children to school and the play park have reported near misses, and say there have several collisions involving nearby houses and gardens.

Mrs Lane added: “Everyone in the area has been very supportive of the petition. Over the years the traffic has become a problem for such a small village.

“It does involve the whole community. I think more people would walk if it was safer, but some people jump in their cars because it’s not safe there.”

Experts from Ceredigion County Council have visited the site and Cllr Lyndon Lloyd has been liaising with police about the possibility of having a speed gun at the location.
