A drink driver swerved onto a verge while being followed by police, a court has heard.

Jason Kristofer White, aged 42, of Flat 1, Electric House, Castle Street, Newcastle Emlyn, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

The court heard that police were on patrol on the A484 Cardigan to Llechryd road at 1am on October 3, when they began following a Vauxhall Astra which has its indicator on for half a mile.

Officers noticed that the vehicle, travelling at no more than 30mph, swerved onto the verge as it approached the village, and could smell alcohol when they stopped it to speak to the driver.

White was arrested and found to have 93mg of alcohol in 100mg of breath when tested at the police station, the legal limit is 35mg.

Iestyn Davies, defending, told the court that his client had struggled with alcohol issues for some time, but had now secured a 15 week residential rehabilitation placement which was due to start next week.

Magistrates imposed a nine month community order, 15 weeks of which would be spent on the rehabilitation placement, and disqualified him from driving for 23 months.

White was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
