A public house near Cardigan where at one time criminals were hanged outside the premises is to be featured on the S4C programme Straeon Tafarn (Pub Tales) next month.

Singer, entertainer and actor Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris has presented a number of programmes on public houses in Wales and his latest visit is to the Penllwyndu, Llangoedmor, alongside the old Cardigan-Newcastle Emlyn road.

The country pub was originally part of the Blaenpat Estate and sold off in 1914 before officially closing in 1926 but it seems ale was being served the 1940’s when beer was brewed in a back room and served in the front parlour.

A local man Terry Porter purchased the building and re-opened the pub in July 1985 with a single bar leading through to a small restaurant.

A number of licensees have come and gone since then and the present mine hosts Ryan and Pat Williams have run the establishment for the past ten years.

Frequent visitors to the watering hole are former Wales and British Lions rugby star Brynmor Williams and his son Lloyd who plays scrum-half for Cardiff Blues, who are related to Ryan and Pat. Brynmor’s father Bryn who is in his nineties also visits the watering hole.

Known as the hanging pub the Penllwyndu is renowned for its unusual sign on the front showing a man hanging from a scaffold – the pub is located on the exact crossroad where in bygone days thieves and villains were brought the five miles or so from Cardigan for execution.

The programme on the public house is being screened on Sunday, November 23.
