Coleg Ceredigion will be holding free two-day workshops to promote much sought after construction skills in the next few weeks.

The free two day taster course, on 27 and 28 October, will be an opportunity to learn more and understand basic brickwork skills, trowel techniques, bonding methods and bedding and buttering. Attendees will be able to build simple structures and gain some DIY tips from experienced brickwork lecturing staff.

The purpose of the event is to highlight brickwork as a worthwhile occupation and to raise awareness of the skill levels involved. The event is sponsored by LBS Builders Merchants Ltd, Llandeilo who have donated the materials for the workshops and every participant at the event will get the chance to win £50 in vouchers to spend at LBS Builders Merchants Ltd.

According to CITB, the Construction Industry Training Board, there is a serious shortage of skilled bricklayers in the UK. CITB is responsible for training in various UK industries, setting standards and providing advice to firms.

The shortage of skilled bricklayers has enabled qualified individuals to capitalise on the situation and demand a higher premium for their work. According to Paul Marsh, CITB Area Delivery Manager for South West Wales: “There is no doubt a need for bricklayers in the Ceredigion area.”

One of the main employers in West Wales, Richard Sutton from Sutton Brothers, also stated “there is a definite shortage of skilled bricklayers in West Wales, there is also a shortage of willing individuals who want to pursue Bricklaying as a career”.

Huw Thomas, curriculum manager at Coleg Ceredigion, explained: “This workshop is a excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in learning basic construction skills. With a shortfall in skilled bricklayers on a national level, there has really never been a better time to consider learning these valuable skills.”

The free two-day workshops run on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 October from 9.30am – 3.30pm at Coleg Ceredigion’s Cardigan Campus. Materials and tools will be provided.
