Following representations from members of the local blind community, Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb has written to companies that provide local bus services, asking them to consider introducing audio-visual announcements on buses to help people with sight loss.

In recent weeks Mr Crabb has been contacted by constituents asking him to support the Guide Dogs’ Talking Buses campaign. He then met with representatives from the charity at the Conservative Party conference.

Access to bus transport is particularly important in rural areas like Pembrokeshire, and Stephen wants to see increased provision for the needs of blind and partially sighted people in the County.

Commenting, the MP said:

“I am delighted to support the Guide Dogs campaign, as I know buses can be a lifeline to blind and partially sighted people.”

“I am writing to local bus companies in Pembrokeshire to ask them to consider what they can do to improve access to buses for the partially sighted. If audio-visual announcements could be introduced on more buses, it would benefit not only those with sight loss but also the elderly and, importantly for Pembrokeshire, tourists.”

“While there are financial constraints involved, I have no doubt that this improvement will become standard in the future. I would like to see it sooner rather than later in Pembrokeshire.”
