A town clerk turned into a biker-chick after councillors organised a special send-off for her retirement last weekend.

Janet Weston, aged 82, took to the road as a pillion motorcycle rider to tour the local countryside on Sunday morning.

Joined by local bikers Jerry Wakeman and Mike Moss, Mrs Weston set off from the Golden Lion, Newport, to be taken on a ride to Dinas mountain, through the Gwaun Valley and on to Rosebush, followed by a convoy of councillors.

Mrs Weston is retiring from her duties as clerk to Newport Town Council after 24 years of service, but plans to continue as clerk to Nevern Community Council.

In the past she rode a 600cc Panther, but the great-grandmother had not been on a bike for 60 years before Sunday’s spin through the local countryside.

The long-standing clerk had only missed two meetings during her decades of service, and councillors paid tribute to her hard work and dedication to the community.

Local County Councillor Paul Harries served on the town council with Mrs Weston for many years.

He said: “We as councillors see Janet as a font of information, she knows so much about Newport and Nevern, and she has an incredible memory.

“She has been brilliant. This is a token of our appreciation; we didn’t think a bunch of flowers would really do the trick.”

The name of the new Newport Town Council clerk is due to be announced this month.
