Every September the seaside town of Porthcawl welcomes thousands of Elvis fans from all over the World in a unique celebration to The King. In its 11th year, the event offers award winning Elvis tribute artists shows and with venues around town forming the fringe festival, it continues to be the largest Elvis event in Europe.
Local man Mike Rees from Newcastle Emlyn was invited to compete in the novice competition. With strong vocals and trademark Elvis dance moves, the standard was high. Mike achieved 2nd place, narrowly missing out the first place with a split decision against a seasoned cruise ship performer. Mike began singing over a year ago at open mic evenings in the Bunch of Grapes in Newcastle Emlyn and has since performed at the Emlyn Music Festival, various open mic evenings in local pubs and will soon be performing in his home town of Cardigan. He is set to return to Porthcawl next year to compete for the Best Festival Elvis title.
