Chance for Wales to play an active part in forging a fairer settlement in the wake of Scotland vote

Elin Jones, Plaid Cymru AM for Ceredigion, has responded to the result of the referendum in Scotland, which resulted in a huge turnout of electors and a narrow vote against independence.

Elin Jones, local AM for Ceredigion, said:

“The people of Scotland have spoken and everyone will respect their decision. Having visited Glasgow in the run-up to the vote, it’s obvious that this was a real democratic awakening, with a massive turnout of over 84%.

“What comes now is a challenge for us all – and one that I relish. This process has confirmed that the that the UK is a collection of distinct nations and peoples.

“Both the Yes and No campaigns made it clear that the status quo isn’t an option. There’s clearly a huge demand for change in our political system.

“The task now is to rebalance Britain, and Plaid Cymru will continue to represent the interests of the people of Wales, in order to secure the powers we need for our country, and strengthen our economy here in Ceredigion.

“The campaign has inspired people, to engage people in politics as never before. I’m determined to play a part in getting a fair deal for Wales.

“There is broad consensus that our settlement and our funding arrangements are not fit for purpose. Wales should not be treated as second class.”
