Newport residents are being asked to play a role in determining future options for the community’s library and visitor information services.

The operation of both facilities, which occupy separate premises in the town, are being considered in light of significant funding cuts.

Pembrokeshire County Council, which runs the library, and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, which manages the Visitor Centre, are working with Newport Town Council to look at future options for these services.

County Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, Councillor Elwyn Morse, said a range of options were being considered.

He said: “One of the suggestions is having the library and the information centre on the same site but there may be other options which will emerge from further discussions.

“We have agreed that a site options appraisal is required and we hope that the people of Newport support the partnership and our efforts to find an innovative solution.”

Councillor Morse said any proposals for change that the partnership recommended would go out to consultation to customers and stakeholders.

He added: “One thing is certain though, because of the large cuts in public funding the current situation regarding the library is not a viable option.”

Chief Executive of the National Park Authority, Tegryn Jones, said: “The Authority is currently consulting on all of its services in light of ongoing budget reductions and the options for Newport Visitor Centre are being considered as part of a wider review.

“We would welcome views from anyone with an interest in the future of the Visitor Centre or the Authority’s wider work. Full details of our future priorities survey can be found on our website – www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk.”

Cllr Elaine Lloyd, Chairman of Newport Town Council, expressed her concerns, but confirmed that the Town Council is working with both parties and reviewing a number of options and alternative venues in an attempt to minimise the impact of the proposals.

Suggestions from residents should be forwarded to her by emailing elainelloyd3197@fsmail.net.
