Ceredigion Youth Service recently undertook a successful Summer Skills programme in partnership with Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training.

The programme was aimed at young people leaving school following their GCSE exams, who were unsure about what to do next regarding work, training or education.

The service recruited 43 young people to the Summer Skills programme, and working in conjunction with Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training’s Llanbadarn Learning Centre, was able to offer courses for the young people that included Building a CV, Preparation for Work and Team Building. Hands-on taster courses were also provided in Equine, Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Therapy, Childcare, Information Technology, Woodwork, Plumbing, Electrics, Vehicle Maintenance and Blacksmithing.

Many of the courses were accredited and collectively the Summer Skills programme saw the young people gain a total of 104 accreditations for the work and training they undertook.

They also gained a new sense of what they wanted to do following the summer holidays, and some have registered for courses with Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training.

One youth worker said: “I certainly believe the Summer Skills programme was a great opportunity for young people to have a wider understanding of what the options are out there for them.”
