An 82 year-old retired teacher has been banned from driving for a year, after driving while over the drink drive limit,

Francis Thomas Evans, of Llys Dewy, Tresaith Road, Aberporth, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit, when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

The court heard that police officers spotted a Porche Boxster coming onto the wrong side of the road while turning a bend at 5.45pm on July 30.

They followed the car to a residential area and could smell alcohol on Evans’ breath when they spoke to him.

He admitted consuming alcohol before driving the vehicle, and was found to have 54mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

Iestyn Davies, defending, said: “Mr Evans is a retired school teacher, he has never been in any form of trouble before. He is quite embarrassed to find himself here today.”

Mr Davies told the court that Evans had been to Llangrannog, and drank two medium glasses of wine while there.

He said: “He felt fine and drove home. He was rather surprised to find himself over the limit.”

Mr Davies told the court that there were no road markings to separate carriageways on the stretch of road where Evans was seen by police, and no vehicles were going in the other direction.

He added: “A disqualification will cause him some difficulty as he relies on his transport, but he realises he needs to be dealt with.”

Magistrates fined Evans £380, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £38 victim surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
