Local politicians have welcomed the appeal decision on Maesglas play area in Cardigan - but have stressed that village green status must be secured.

Their comments come after a Welsh Assembly inspector turned down Tai Ceredigion's appeal to build nine new homes on the play area.

MP Mark Williams said:

"I congratulate Maesglas residents for their concerted campaign and the Planning Inspectorate for their sense after having weighed up all the evidence.

Maesglas residents do not want this issue to roll on and on, and want the field protected for their community. The issue of their village green application must be addressed promptly, in a way other similar applications have been dealt with previously."

And local AM Elin Jones, who has brought the issue up at the Assembly, said: "Iā€™m pleased that the tenacious campaigners in Maesglas have been successful so far in protecting the playing field. I will continue to work with them in their work and in their application for village green status.ā€
