Stricken leisure craft rescued

First published in News

New Quay inshore lifeboat assisted a rib with two people on board off Aberaeron on Friday morning.

The lifeboat, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, was crewed by Ben Billingham, station mechanic, at the helm with relatively new crew in Daniel Thomas and Daniel McDonald. They quickly established that the problem was a fouled propeller, possibly from contact with a lobster pot line, and towed the rib into Aberaeron Harbour where it was made safe.

Ben Billingham said: "It is always satisfying to rescue people at sea. Today was a relatively straightforward mission with a calm sea and glorious sunny weather. We had a little trouble with the tide flow as we went into the harbour but nothing to worry too much about. We attended promptly, much to the satisfaction of the stranded people."
