Football fans are being urged not to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking during the World Cup.

With many of the matches kicking off at 8pm or 11pm, pubs are being allowed to open until 1am for selected games – and therefore the possibility of late night drinking.

Dyfed-Powys Police is asking football fans to drink responsibly, especially if they need to drive the following morning. Susan Storch, Dyfed-Powys Police Road Safety Officer said: “We understand that people will be celebrating the World Cup across the UK, and we want people to enjoy the festival of football but not to take a risk and get behind the wheel while you are over the limit.”

Police say it is important motorists understand the following morning can be just as dangerous as the night before – so drinking into the early hours can have a significant impact on the ability to drive the morning after.

Susan Storch added: “The message of this campaign is to raise awareness of drink and drug driving and remind motorists of the amount of time that alcohol stays in the body.

“If you have been drinking late then the message is simple – don't get in your car the following morning. You are putting yourself and others at risk."
