A team from Rhedwyr Emlyn Runners will run from Llangrannog to Cardigan Castle as part of the GB Relay 2014 on June 16.

More than 2,000 runners of all abilities are expected to take part in this world record attempt.

A GPS baton will be carried right around the coastline of mainland Britain covering more than 7,000 kilometres in 594 stages.

The first stage commenced in Scarborough on June 1, and the event is now moving in an anticlockwise direction, heading towards Scotland.

The local team includes Heulwen James, Richard James, Lidia De Orte Jimenez, Bryan Rees, Rebecca Davies and Wendy Tromans, who will be receiving the baton from Tracey Williams outside the Ship Inn Llangrannog at 6.52pm on the June 16 and handing over to Adrian Lewis at Cardigan Castle at 9.18pm.

Tracey is a third year student nurse currently on placement in Llandysul. She started running after contracting meningitis and needing to regain strength to complete her nursing degree. A friend recommended running and she has just run her fourth half marathon in Liverpool and has signed up for her first marathon in Manchester in 2015.

Heulwen started running in 1996 in order to raise money to purchase a defibrillator after her uncle died suddenly from a heart attack. Her first run was the British Heart Foundation 10k which covered a section of the leg to be run on the GB relay.

She then progressed to half-marathons and to date has completed 10 marathons and raised funds for various other charities.

Heulwen said: “I chose this stage of the GB relay from Llangrannog to Cardigan Castle as I enjoy a challenge. My stage includes my local training routes and takes me back to my first ever race, which sadly no longer exists. Also, the handover is at Cardigan Castle, a place that is close to my heart as it is a charity I am currently involved with as a volunteer. I run with Rhedwyr Emlyn Runners, I am currently their club coach and secretary.”

She will hand over the baton to Adrian Lewis from Aberdare, who will run from Cardigan to Eglwyswrw.

Residents are invited to support the runners along the way. For further details visit http://gbrelay.com/about.php.
