Wales Office Minister and Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb has confirmed that Ministers will look at easing a bureaucratic issue affecting the sale of Welsh Black cattle.
The Welsh Black breed is Wales’ only native breed of cattle and a feature of agricultural life in Pembrokeshire.
Speaking in the House of Commons chamber, North Wales MP Elfyn Llwyd highlighted problems that some farmers have encountered selling the cattle to farms across the border in England.
The cattle are identified as an endangered species in Wales, but not in England. This has prevented English farmers participating in the English Countryside Stewardship scheme from purchasing the animals from Welsh farms.
Responding to Mr Llwyd’s question, local MP Stephen Crabb said: “The Welsh Black is a fine example of Welsh quality produce. There should not be any bureaucratic or policy reasons why it should not be able to be traded in England on an equal basis. I will look into the matter urgently with my colleagues from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.”
