The Queens Baton Relay will come to Cardigan on May 28, when five local primary school pupils will carry the baton, followed by fellow Bronze Young Ambassadors.

The baton began its long journey through the Commonwealth on October 9. Now that it has completed its international stretch after 248 days, the baton is beginning its UK leg for the final 72 days of the tour, leading up to the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

Cardigan welcomes the Queens Baton Relay as the baton enters Ceredigion on Wednesday, May 28. Five local pupils will carry the baton through the town centre, starting at Prince Charles’ Quay at 12pm and ending in Theatr Mwldan at 12.30pm.

The pupils are part of Ceredigion’s Bronze Young Ambassadors’ team. As part of their role as Bronze Ambassadors the pupils run lunchtime sports and activity clubs in their schools, help out with PE lessons and help to promote sports participation and healthy lifestyles to their fellow pupils.

The five Baton Bearers carrying the baton through Cardigan are Grace Morris (Llandysul primary school), Iestyn Evans (Cardigan Primary school), Lowri Adams-Lewis (Cardigan Primary school), Jack Ramsbottom (Aberporth Primary school) and Rhys Griffiths (T Llew Jones Primary school).

They will be followed by Bronze Young Ambassadors Tessa Hyatt, George Monders, Shannon Driscoll Edwards, Owen Valentine, Charlotte Ann Evans, Bleddyn Morgan, Ffion Wyn Sinnett-Jones, Megan Thomson, Jac Blackford, Isaac Guildford, Osian Davies, Buddug Horscraft, Chloe Evans, Jacob Thomas, Kieran Rollins and Morgan Mason.

Iestyn Evans from Cardigan Primary school will be carrying the baton 50 years after his Grandfather, Denzil Evans, carried it when the relay came to Cardiff.

Iestyn said: “My grandfather also carried the baton for the Commonwealth Games in the very first Queen’s Baton Relay, back in 1958. This was when Cardiff was the host city of the Games – so it feels very special for me to carry it and follow in his footsteps. I’ll feel very proud carrying it with him looking on.”

Denzil Evans, Iestyn’s grandfather, who lives in Cardigan says the experience has brought back memories: “When I took part it was the first time the relay had happened so it was an historical event. I’m glad this time I can put my feet up and let Iestyn do the work, but it will be just as good an experience, and one that will live with him for years to come.”

Ann Eleri Jones of Ceredigion Council is pleased to welcome the baton to the county.

She said: “Falling in the middle of the Whitsun half term holidays, we anticipate a big turnout for the Queen’s Baton as it passes through Cardigan."

In baton relay will continue in Aberaeron between 1.15pm and 2.15pm and Aberystwyth between 3pm and 3.45pm.
