Elin Jones, Plaid Cymru AM for Ceredigion, has spoken up for residents of Maesglas in Cardigan in a debate on the floor of the National Assembly.
A play-area near the Maesglas estate has been the subject of planning applications by housing body Tai Ceredigion, but residents have opposed the loss of green space within the community.
In questions to the Minister for Natural Resources, Elin Jones raised the issue of Maesglas, arguing that the outcome of the application for Village Green status should be decided before any development was considered. She has also contacted the Planning Inspectorate on residents’ behalf.
Plaid Cymru’s Ceredigion AM Elin Jones said,
“Under current law, communities can apply to register green spaces as village greens when a housing planning application is submitted. That has happened at Talybont, where a popular green area was saved from development.
“Local authorities should consider any application by a local community for the registration of a village green before the construction of new houses in the area. To do otherwise would make no sense.
“The community should have the first opportunity to have the discussion to preserve the playing field as a village green.”
