A lifelong love of buses has led to a Cardigan man publishing his first book.

Les Dickinson, a retired retail manager, has painstakingly captured the history of local bus firm Richards Brothers in a new book published this month.

The glossy 176-page book, packed with photographs, takes a look at the 80-year history of Richards Bros, from their beginnings with founder WG Richards in the 1930s to the successful local bus company run by his three grandsons today.

Les, who has been a bus enthusiast since he was a small boy, was taken with the history of Richards Bros.

"I was very much aware that the story of Richard Bros had never been written down. It is one of the few remaining independent family bus firms, something that is becoming even more rare these days," said Les, who lives in North Road.

Richard Bros, which started as a Moylegrove-based haulage business, has grown into a company which operates around 80 buses and employs 90 local people.

Generations of schoolchildren and daytrippers have used the buses, travelling on different makes and models throughout the years.

Les has compiled a fascinating collection of photographs dating back to the 1940s with evocative shots of Burlingham coaches and Bedford buses that will trigger nostalgia for the early days of bus travel.

In a foreword to the book, Richards Bros partner Marteine Richards says: "Whilst the book forcuses on the vehicles and services, ours is also a story of people serving the people, and much of the success is due to a loyal workforce. I am sure that enthusiasts and those with a thirst for nostalgia will all enjoy this account."

Richard Brothers Cardigan and Newport is published by Venture publications, price £20, and is available at local book shops.
