The future of the celebrated annual Barley Saturday stallion show and parade in Cardigan is in doubt prompting organisers to make an appeal for help from landowners near the town in order to prevent the demise of the unique event.

The hugely popular show which dates back to the middle of the 19th century and was resurrected in 1961 attracts hundreds of people to the town on the last Saturday in April providing a big boost to local businesses.

The show has been held at Penralltddu Field adjacent to the junior school and at the rear of Napier Gardens for many years, but organisers have been informed by the owners of the field that this is the last time the land will be available.

After Saturday’s show which was another outstanding success (see report and results on page ) show secretary Tudor Harries confirmed that it was the last show at Penralltddu which is just a stone’s throw from town centre and ideal for the start of the parade.

“We as a committee will meet shortly to discuss the matter. We are looking for a new venue and although we have some in mind they are not really ideal.

“We need somewhere from where it is easy for horses to be led into the town and paraded through the streets, and anyone out there who can help keep the show alive can get in touch with me or any committee member,” he said.
