Viewers across the UK will soon be able to experience a taste of the breath-taking Ceredigion landscape, as ground-breaking detective series Y Gwyll / Hinterland airs on BBC Four.

The series, which is due to begin broadcasting on Monday, 28 April, features actor Richard Harrington as DCI Tom Mathias, who has left the police force in London to begin a new life in Aberystwyth – but he encounters a lot more than he perhaps bargained for.

The highly acclaimed first series of Y Gwyll/Hinterland originally aired in Welsh on S4C in autumn 2013, and then on BBC One Wales in a version which featured dialogue in both English and Welsh with on-screen subtitles for the Welsh language elements. It is now set to be broadcast across the UK on award-winning channel BBC Four.

Ann Eleri Jones of Ceredigion Council believes that this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase home-grown drama to a wider audience as well as the local landscape.

“It’s great to see the iconic landmarks and tourist attractions of Ceredigion incorporated into the plot of the show – Devil’s Bridge, for example, and Aberystwyth’s pier - even if they are depicted as menacing in the context of Y Gwyll! But it offers an intriguing contrast for visitors to the area and fans of the show, when they get to see what these places are really like.”

Indeed, Y Gwyll/Hinterland has already proved such a hit with viewers that a second series has been commissioned, with filming due to start this coming Autumn.

“We’re looking forward to seeing which other famous Ceredigion landmarks the producers will be focusing on in the next series,” continues Ann Eleri.

Gethin Scourfield, Director of Y Gwyll/Hinterland added:

“When we were developing the series we wanted to set it somewhere that was obviously Welsh and had a distinct character. Aberystwyth sprung to mind because of its fantastic location on the west coast of Wales. The glorious Ceredigion landscapes have a sense of scale which gives the series a unique atmosphere - everywhere we pointed the camera it gave us a fantastic backdrop for the action.”

Ceredigion clearly captured imagination across the board through Y Gwyll/Hinterland, as S4C’s acclaimed production has also been acquired for broadcast by channel DR1 in Denmark and it was also announced this week that online streaming giant Netflix has purchased the series for broadcast in North America and Canada.
