Takeaway owner fined

The owner of a north Pembrokeshire fast food outlet has been fined a total of £3,000 by Haverfordwest Magistrates after admitting to three food hygiene offences.

Mrs Xiu Ying Yu of the Dragon House Takeaway in Hamilton Street, Fishguard, was also ordered to pay £1,322.40 costs to Pembrokeshire County Council on Monday.

The council brought the case following breaches found at the premises during an inspection in February 2013, by an officer from the Authority’s Public Protection Division.

As well as revealing the lack of an adequate food safety management system, evidence was found of a failure to keep the food premises clean and in good repair and condition, and a failure to keep articles, fittings and equipment with which food comes into contact, clean and in good order.

Afterwards the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services, Councillor Huw George, stressed that the Authority would not hesitate to take action where serious contraventions of the legislation were discovered by authorised officers.

He said: “While we could not excuse the serious nature of the breaches identified at the premises, the business deserves credit for fully co-operating with the council in dealing promptly with the highlighted risks.

“I am also pleased to report that at the last programmed inspection, standards were being maintained and the premises was awarded a score of four, which equates to ‘Good’ under the food hygiene rating scheme.”

Councillor George added that it was important for potential customers to check the hygiene rating of food businesses they were considering using.

Yu was also ordered by Magistrates to pay a victim surcharge of £100.
