AN unusually flavoured gin – which is available to buy in Carmarthen Market - is making a splash.

Welsh Seaweed Gin, from the home of the renowned Caws Teifi Cheese, has been turning heads since it launched this St David’s Day.

It’s the brainchild of John Savage-Onstwedder who also makes a Caws Teifi Seaweed cheese.

Taking more than a year to get ready for the market, the first batch of gin has already been a sell-out on the day it launched and shoppers are now flocking to Carmarthen Market for their taste.

“On the day the Seaweed Gin launched we sold out at a St David’s Day event in Saundersfoot,” said Caws Teifi Cheese market trader Danny Van Opstal.

“It’s selling really well. People have heard about the new gin and are coming to the market to taste and buy it.”

The seaweed is gathered from the beach at New Quay and is made in small batches at the Dà Mhìle Distillery near Llandysul.

Depending on the season there will be a variation in colour and flavour of the seaweed which makes every batch unique.

Also available to buy in Carmarthen Market is the botanical gin, orange liqueur and organic single grain scotch whiskey.

County Council executive board member responsible for markets in the county, Cllr Jeff Edmunds, said: “It’s always worth a visit to one of the markets in our county as they’re the ideal place to find unique, top quality produce such as this.”
