Thirty new jobs are in the pipeline for Newcastle Emlyn with supermarket giants Aldi proposing to open a store in Station Road.

The Tivy-Side can reveal that Aldi plan to open a store at Castle Motors which is a stone’s throw from AC’s supermarket.

Some years ago the Liddl supermarket chain obtained planning permission for a store on the same site but this did not come to fruition.

Now Aldi are eager to set up in business and a spokesman confirmed the company had entered into a contract on the Castle Motors site.

The spokesman said: “The opening of this store will offer shoppers more choice in the wider area, as well as creating around 30 additional permanent jobs,

“The site benefits from full planning consent for a discount food store, very similar in size and layout to Aldi’s regular format.”

Adding that a planning application would be submitted to Carmarthenshire County Council in the next six to eight weeks the spokesman said “We propose to adapt the existing consent to meet Aldi’s specific requirements.”

Local Carmarthenshire County Councillor Hazel Evans said “I appreciate that struggling families need a discount store but I would not want it to have a detrimental effect on the town. We have a lovely shopping centre with plenty of variety.”
