A wind turbine at one of the most picturesque spots in Ceredigion would turn tourists away from the area it was claimed this week.

Planners have agreed to have a site meeting to discuss a scheme to erect a 34m turbine at Brynonnen, Nanternis, New Quay.

The scheme has been submitted by two farming families who already have a turbine at their main holding at Penlanymor, Llanarth.

They claim the second turbine will make their farm sustainable and allow younger family members to farm.

But objectors say that it will be a visual intrusion in an area popular with tourists and only metres from the Ceredigion Coast Path.

Local resident Gareth West said:"This is a special place and needs protection."

Planning officers recommended refusal of the scheme.

But councillors expressed sympathy with the farmers.

"I don't think a wind turbine will make a jot of difference to the coast path," said Cllr Towyn Evans.

But Cllr Gethin James said culmative impact needed to be taken into consideration.

"We need more information, it's all about location, location, location," he said.

And Cllr John Lumley said:"I'm concerned that Ceredigion is becoming one giant wind farm."
