WALES YFC have shown their support towards Natural Resources and Food Minister Alun Davies’ call for a voluntary ban on sky lanterns.
The letter, which has been sent to local authorities and organisations across Wales, urges people to consider the risks that are posed when sky lanterns are released and to discourage their use wherever possible. Wales YFC have supported Alun Davies’ recommendation to ban the release of sky lanterns and believe it is especially topical with the approach of Bonfire Night.
Speaking on behalf of Wales YFC, Rural Affairs Chairman, Iwan Thomas said: “Sky lanterns and more specifically fallen lanterns are a dangerous fire hazard but also pose massive risks to, not only farmed animals, but also the broad reservoir of wildlife in rural Wales. Their irresponsible release poses a risk to animal health but also health and safety. With Bonfire Night coming up and many clubs celebrating this event, we encourage members not to release sky lantern at their club nights.”
