Community donations questioned

DONATIONS have been called into question at Llandysul Community Council.
Cllr Terry Griffiths highlighted the issue at Monday’s meeting after discovering the local carnival committee had handed out cheques to other organisations following a £500 donation from the council.
He said: “Some of the organisations may have already been funded by this council and are getting a double whammy. Does the carnival committee really need this council’s support?”
Cllr Wyn Evans said: “It was mentioned earlier this year that these organisations should retain some money, if there is some left over, to sustain them next year.”
The council’s clerk told members that application packs for donation requests now told organisations that the council may not be able to provide the same financial support every year.
Cllr Doug Davies said: “We give them money to help them run the event. If they give it away, it’s a waste of the council’s money.”
Cllr Eileen Curry added: “The other side of the coin is that we are helping them to sustain an event in the community, which helps other organisations in the community, so it goes full circle really.”
Chairman Tom Cowcher thanked Cllr Griffiths for raising the issue. He said: “We will bear it in mind next time.”
