Ceredigion MP Mark Williams has raised concerns about a lack of investment in Wales’ railways.
Mr Williams has highlighted recently published figures, which indicate that of the £2 billion invested by Network Rail in 2011/2012 into rail infrastructure, only £15 million of that was spent in Wales and its bordering areas, which account for less than 1%.
While Wales and the Borders has more than 5% of the population of Great Britain, it received just 0.7% of Network Rail’s spending on enhancing the rail network in 2011/12, and this area includes not only Wales, but also Chester, Shrewsbury and other adjoining areas.
Mr Williams said: "These figures show once again that Wales has been short changed. "The Welsh railway system desperately needs investment and has done for years, yet it would seem that this is still not forthcoming. "I have written to Network Rail about this, and sincerely hope we will see the figure spent on Welsh railways rise in subsequent years."
