Pacemaker man assaulted, court hears

As a 60-year-old man fitted with an artificial cardiac pacemaker walked home late at night in Cardigan he was attacked by a 26-year-old man, a court has been told.

Richard Drower suffered a swollen left eye and split lip and was bleeding from the mouth and nose when he fell backwards to the ground.

His assailant Thomas Burt Francis Eley then punched him to the face and kicked him to the left of his chest.

After the assault in the Castle Street area an ambulance took Mr Drower to hospital.

The unsavoury incident shortly after 10pm on Thursday, November 29 last year had a sequel at Ceredigion Magistrates Court when Eley, of Caravan 2, Pwllymeidw, Fishguard Road, Cardigan, who was represented by David Williams, admitted an offence of common assault.

Prosecutor Gerald Neave said the incident happened as Mr Drower walked towards Ridgeway and he met the defendant who set about him.

In mitigation Mr Williams said Eley saw the other man walking across the pedestrian footbridge spanning the River Teifi and he was wearing a coat with the hood up. It made Eley feel intimidated as he was walking home his two young girl cousins and he feared for their safety.

He later told police he did not know Mr Drower.

Mr Williams added that his client was receiving treatment for a mental health condition.

Eley was made the subject of a Community Order and ordered to pay £100 compensation to his victim and court costs totalling £70.
