Cash boost for local charity

Wheelchair users at a local charity are set to test their creative skills following a cash boost.

HUTS, based in Newcastle Emlyn, offers art, craft and other learning opportunities to adults with mental health problems.

The organisation recently received funding from Welsh employer Admiral, which will help purchase a table top potter’s wheel which will enable wheelchair users to take part in pottery workshops.

HUTS , which stands for Help Us To Survive, received the £400 funding from Admiral after Frances Smith who works in the company’s Claims department in Swansea, applied to the Admiral Community Chest scheme. The scheme provides funding for charities and organisations in which staff members or their families are involved.

Frances said: “My Mum uses a wheelchair and she loves arts and crafts so I applied to see if Admiral would provide funding for HUTS as it’s a really important charity to me. The money will be a great help towards the new pottery room and offer a new activity for the people who go to HUTS to try out.”

Dee Stott, manager of HUTS said: “HUTS provides support for people who are recovering from mental illness and being able to come to HUTS provides them with therapeutic, creative activities, access learning in a wide range of skills from cooking to computing all done over a cup of tea and a chat.

“The money received from the Admiral Community Chest scheme will go towards the purchase of a table top potter’s wheel which will enable wheelchair users to make full use of our planned pottery workshops.”
