Youngsters to start school at three in Cardigan

Pupils will soon be able to start school at Ysgol Gynradd Aberteifi from the age of three.

Ceredigion’s Cabinet backed the proposal last week and gave the go-ahead for a consultation period.

“IT’s an important development in respect of education in the Cardigan area,” said Cllr Hag Harris, the Cabinet member for education.

“It brings Ysgol Gynradd Aberteifi into line with other schools in urban areas which offer nursery education. It will also increase the capacity for nursery education in the area.”
The meeting heard that there is a waiting list for pre-schoolers.

“There are waiting lists for the Integrated Centre and as a result Flying Start are funding children to attend other providers, including providers outside Ceredigion,” said the report to Cabinet.
“Admitting pupils earlier to Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Aberteifi would ensure extra places at the centre.”
Cllr Harris added: “The benefits to the school and the community are considerable.”
