Alleged fraud victim dies

Two scrap dealers appeared in court today accused of defrauding an elderly man from Lledrod.

The alleged victim, Evan John Davies, died just 48 hours before David Richard Vaughan and Benjamin Price were before Judge Paul Thomas at Swansea crown court.

Vaughan, aged 41, of 24 Bryngoch, Machynlleth, and Price, 33, of Westover Caravan Park, Bynea, Whitland near Carmarthen, denied falsely representing that £2,400 worth of work was needed on the roof of Mr Davies' home.

They also denied a charge of attempted fraud by falsely representing that paint work was necessary at a cost of £1,800.

Huw Rees, prosecuting, said the case involved allegations that work was not actually carried out or was not completed.

He said that despite the death of Mr Davies, aged 77, the prosecution would continue.

Vaughan and Price will stand trial in early April.

They were granted bail meanwhile.
