Ceredigion’s Elin Jones AM this week called on the First Minister to intervene over the continued closure of the Afallon mental health ward at Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth.

In a question to Carwyn Jones AM on Tuesday (13 November 2012), the Plaid Cymru AM highlighted the fact that there are now no emergency mental health beds available between the M4 and A55 corridors.

After raising Afallon’s closure with the First Minister, Elin Jones AM:

“I’m very concerned that the continued closure of the Afallon ward at Bronglais Hospital means that there are no emergency beds available for mental health patients between the M4 and A55 corridor. The fact that we are still no wiser about whether Afallon will be reopening means that there’s now a gap in local provision which isn’t being met.

“Very often, mental health patients are the least inclined to raise their voices about the service that they receive, or the lack of service in this particular instance. I therefore called on the First Minister to be an advocate for them and request firm details from the Health Board about when it will be reinstating the much-needed mental health beds to Aberystwyth”
