Cardigan town councillors are to press for parking charges to be axed in Cardigan.

Councillors are worried that rising fuel prices and the economic slowdown are having a negative effect on town trade.

"It seems unfair to me that people can park for free at Tesco, while in the centre of town, where local businesses pay a lot in rates to Ceredigion, they have to pay," said Cllr Llwyd Edwards.

Cllr Wynne (correct) Evans agreed.

"It is so expensive for people to come into town. It's not as if we live in an urban area where there are lots of bus services. People have no alternative but to drive."

Local county councillor John Adams-Lewis said that if the town council felt so strongly about the issue it should write a letter to Ceredigion.

At last a breath of fresh air, well done Cllr Edwards, scrapping or even reducing the parking charges in Cardigan is bound to be an incentive to shoppers, and should be given serious consideration.
