The proposed £50m Bath House site will create up to 600 new jobs, developers claimed this week.

Liberty Mercian, the South Wales based developer behind the scheme, says that its plans will help to deliver a sustainable future for the town.

The plans for the site will see between 550 and 600 new jobs being created through the construction of one food retail store and three non-retail units, with further new jobs anticipated through the proposed hospital, healthcare centre and social housing scheme which makes up the rest of the development.

Emyr Williams, Development Director, Liberty Mercian said: "To be able to confirm that the Bath House scheme will deliver more than 600 new jobs for Cardigan is fantastic news for the town.

The Bath House scheme will also see more than 600 new jobs being created at a time when there are concerns not only about the current economic climate, but also, the long term prospects for rural areas in Wales. When you add in the anticipated further jobs that will come from the other aspects of the scheme, such as the hospital and health centre, as well as the associated service industries that will supply the businesses located on the Bath House site, then you will realise that it will have a very significant positive impact on Cardigan's economy indeed.

"The investment that Liberty Mercian is making in the town is a clear indication of the confidence that we and other business have in Cardigan, and in the Bath House plans in particular. We are constantly in active discussions with top quality retailers regarding our ongoing schemes nationwide and it is clear that they also share our confidence in Cardigan.

"Liberty Mercian has a proud record of working with councils and leading retailers to deliver similar schemes throughout the UK, which provide real benefits and regenerate whole towns and communities. We can point to schemes across Wales in places such as Wrexham, Pontardawe, Holyhead, Llandudno Junction and Ammanford where we have helped to regenerate the local area and this is very much our aim with Bath House."

How long will it be before the usual suspects who object to Bathhouse start shouting that these claims of new jobs are untrue. There will be cries of "pie in the sky" and "propaganda" and "bribery". One individual was last week quoted as saying that the intervention of Edwina Hart in the Bathhouse saga threatened to cause the demise of the town and its promising future. What evidence could possibly lead to this conclusion that without the Bathhouse development, the town has a promising future. Established pubs and shops are closing at an alrming rate. The economy is heading for recession and the people of Cardigan can ill afford to pass over such a huge investment with the employment it will bring.

Is the promise of 600 new jobs to Cardigan worth the loss of many in the town centre, people think that shops and pubs are closing at an alarming rate now?? When the developer claims that 50% of the traffic will reduce in the town centre and 50% of the existing shops will be affected by this development, is this a healthy situation for Cardigan town centre to be placed in by the hands of a developer?????? Again lets have a new health centre etc. New housing but no Supermarket War.... Please Please look at what has happened to the High Street in Llanelli, with the promise of a new outer town development and the creation of 100s of new jobs. There are at least 15 closed shops, more now than before the development was built. The smaller retailer has suffered at the hands of the giants, were buying power talks.. Lets not mention the fact that this development has been given planning by Ceredigion County Council, without the site even having its own access. Would Jo Bloggs wanting a house to live in the locality, gain the planning permission he wants to remain in living in the area he grew up in ??????? This must be seen as the old saying goes " one rule for one another for the other "
