PO consultation 'sham'

THE consultation on post office closures in Ceredigion has been a sham' say local councillors.

"The plans to close Pontsian post office are a disaster for the village," said Cllr Philippa Davies, who represents the area on Llandysul Community Council.

"The consultation has been at best a sham and at worst dishonest. Appeal factors such as the social and community role of the post office are not being considered, only footfall and usage," said Cllr Andrew Howell.

The consultation on the proposed closure programme in the county closed this week. A total of 14 small post offices are due to close. Some will be replaced by a mobile service.

"It is disgusting that any post office is being closed," said Cllr Wyn Evans. "It is very busy at Pontsian and they work very hard there."

Chairman, Cllr Tom Cowcher said: "The shop took off very well there. Pontsian came alive when the shop took off, because the village had a new focus. There is a social side to this. This is all very disappointing- this community is very important."

Cllr Davies added: "Staff will go if the shop has to close. There were expansion plans there but now they won't do it. They can't afford to now.

"Also, it should be noted that the nearest alternative post office is four miles away in Llandysul."
