A view worth dying for?

SINCE I became a journalist I have been in several seriously dangerous situations in my working life - and walking the planned route of the Ceredigion coast path in the Cardigan Island Farm Park certainly rates among my top ten hazards, writes Jackie Biggs.

I followed the approved route on Friday guided by Lyn Jenkins along the convoluted twists and turns through the fields of Clyn-yr-Ynys farm and the coastal strip of the farm park.

Traversing ravines and walking across the narrow ledges on the cliff tops rates pretty highly on my personal scale of hazardous jobs.

It was just as scary, for example, as making my first parachute jump or running white water rapids in a canoe - the sort of "reporter in action" stories we used to do 20 or 30 years ago.

The large slippery clumps of grass along the route of the path hide deep holes that would break the sturdiest ankle. It is very easy to lose your footing and there will be no fencing to protect walkers from falling over the cliffs.

At several points the route passes close to the edge of the precipice. And there are steep banks to be negotiated down the gulleys.

The views are stunning, but the dangers are very clear - if you fall over the edge you drop straight to the rocks below. And it would be easy to lose your footing at many points.

At the public inquiry into the path's route in January Ceredigion County Council agreed that users would have to take care on the path, "as on any coastal path".

"Safety cannot be guaranteed," the inspector was told.

I'd say that what can be absolutely guaranteed is that this route would be dangerous for all the walkers who use it.

Just who is it in the Ceredigion Council who seems so blindly determined to press ahead with this folly? He or she is obviuously not the type who would admit they are wrong and change their minds in the weight of both public opinion and of the obvious hazards to visitors that have been indentified .

I am sorry but there is allways an element of risk on walking any coastal path. Some of the high level paths in Snowdonia and the Lake District are far more dangerous but when used with the proper care are no real danger. Why are you now starting to support Mr jenkins in his campaign to keep the public from these fantastic views?

To Brian Clarke, What are you talking about? This public path is INSIDE my farm park for 0.6miles ,so the council backed by the inspector intends to ruin our business by letting people in free of charge into my farm park attraction. The path also zig-zags unfenced through my farm land for 1 mile, making it impossible to farm as thousands with dogs cross our farm land all over the place. This is OUTRIGHT LAND THEFT! Our whole farm park and farm is being STOLEN, because I have marketed with 150,000 brochures p.a for 15 years and 500 domains of MY OWN, linked to my www.visit-the-world.
co.uk web-site. The council have NO CAR PARK , so people will clearly park on our ROAD, as the inspector ADMITS. So, it follows that FIRE TENDERS , AMBULANCES , COAST GUARD vehicles and ELECTRICITY repair vehicles will not be able to enter the farm park with possibly more than a 1000 people there. Our visitor centre will not have cover for fire from the fire service. Plus we will lose trade if the road is blocked. There is an 80 ft deep ravine,75 yards wide , with 70 degree slopes. Children will be killed or injured crossing that. The cliffs are dangerous and there is only 2 to 6 feet width outside PROTECTED SSSI fields for about 200 yards.
Can we all walk around YOUR PROPERTY , Brian Clarke? Who do you think you are? This council will have to pay millions in compensation !!

This coastal path entering Cardigan Island Fasrm Park is a travesty of justice for Mr Lyn Jenkins. The Ceredigion County Council and the Assembly are trying to destroy his business because he has dared to criticise them in the past. Why do coastal paths not enter Port Meirion; Tintagel Castle; St Michael's Mount; Penclacwydd; Port Talbot Steel Works; Swansea Docks and Military Camps? Why? Because they are important tourism businesses or strategic centres. Who does this Mr Clarke think he is demanding FREE entrance to Mr Jenkins business? Tell us your address Mr Clarke so we can all come in and tramp around your house at all times. I live at Bron y Mynydd, Craigcefnparc, Swansea. Come and try and walk around my property and I will throw you out on your ear with as much reasonable force as the law permits. What's your address Mr Clarke?

Everyone tells us to support indigenous inititiative, to build up the private sector in Wales, yet Ceredigion Council now wants to destroy a business built up by a local man in order to provide a mecca for the suicidal. No coincidence, perhaps, that this man has been a critic of a council once described by an MP as 'The Wild West Show' because of the corruption endemic to its operations. If Lyn Jenkins' property was an illegal hippy encampment the council would probably have made a detour around it.

Gentlemen you miss my point, this was that there is an element of risk ivvolved in walking any path, some being more dangerous than others.
Some points to think about Mr Jenkins, next week my family will go on a walking holiday in the Lake District where we will be welcomed by local farmers to enjoy the scenery and walks. In return I will pay to park my car,pay to camp or enjoy the comforts of the bunk house when available, eat in the local tea rooms, drink in the local, and buy their souveniers.Perhaps you need to think how to make the coastal path work for you and not view visitors as an alien race,it is called tourism and brings a lot of benefits.
For your information my family have often paid to use your facilities and have no problem doing so,please start to think outside the box, there are benefits to be had I am sure, not just for you but for all in your area.

Brian Clarke, What is the matter with you? Where is your LOGIC? The path PASSES THROUGH THE FARM PARK, which has cost us millions in finance and labour over 15 years. The path lets people INTO THE FARM PARK FREE, so why would ANYONE ever pay again? Plus our FARM LAND WILL BE UNFARMABLE because the path is unfenced and passes several FARM GATES which can't be locked, because tractors use them every day. Don't tell me that I treat tourists like "aliens" when we greet them to the farm park every day, but who is going to pay for entry when they can traipse ALL OVER MY FARM AND FARM PARK FREE OF CHARGE?? When walkers park on my top road , NO-ONE WILL GET IN OR OUT OF HERE......including FIRE BRIGADE AND AMBULANCES AND COAST GUARD !! You are totally without common-sense. NO-ONE PAYS AT THE FRONT DOOR WITH THE BACK-DOOR OPEN!!

Long sections of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path are fenced on both sides, to stop people falling over the cliffs and to deter trespass onto private property. Why cannot that be done here?

Lyn Jenkins, Gwbert says...

Cliff Pope, You miss the point even though you have a very apt Christian name. Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park is a PAY-TO ENTER tourist attraction covered by Public Liability insurance. The Pembs Coast path is not!! If you fall over a cliff in Pembs, the insurance companies are not involved. If Ceredigion Council are bringing walkers into OUR FARM PARK, they will be responsible. However, it looks like that this path is so dangerous..and YOU CANNOT FENCE AN 80FT RAVINE THAT THE PATH CROSSES....that we will be UNINSURABLE. Therefore , the farm park, WHICH IS ONE ENTITY RUN BY CEREDIGION LEISURE LTD, will have to CLOSE. So we will SUE THE COUNCIL for MILLIONS of pounds in compensation for 15 years of investment and 20 years future earnings. You must compare OUR CLIFFS to Folly Farm and Oakwood , NOT the FREEBIE Pembs Coast path !!

This dressed up article has more to do with preventing the coastal path than it has about the concerns for anyone walking on it and injuring themselves. Pembrokeshire Coastal Path was in place 15 years ago, The farm must have looked at the threats to the business even then, to assume that the coast path wouldnt be extended at some point is naive. This is more about preventing walkers, ownership & compensation than loss of business. Anybody who has walked the coastal path know there is a boundary fence 15m-30m from the edge. I've never met a walker that would trespass to gain free access to an Attraction and if they are - there numbers are small, and if this is the case they can surely do this at the moment without the path in place. The seems to be a narrow minded protectionist attitude, battern down the hatches - The farm actually might flurish with 'passing trade' and the influx of tourism between Aberystwth and Cardigan. As an analogy, most towns without a large supermarket such as Tesco,Sainsburys petition for stores to set up because they realise the possibility of getting 2% of passing trade. Wake up, this is a benefit not a disaster - all the advertising in the world, wouldn't benefit you more than having worldwide recognition of a coastal path walk extending the majority of the Welsh Coast.

Jackie Briggs, you say the you have been in seriously, dangerous situatutions in your jounanilsm career, Here i am offering you a chance to come with me to my next assignment in Afghanistan. I have already been to Sierre Leon, Palestine and Iraq, and believe me, that is more hair raising than walking along a path. I have lost count at the many times i been shot at or bombs going off so close you feel the ground shake. You are media hyping as usual over a silly path, which anyone with any common sense could get by no problem. Please come with me, it is a genuine offer to Afghanistan, you have your journal card, and report how well our local boys are doing out there.

Jackie Biggs has written a well balanced article, having seen military action myself,it does not diminish this cautionary tale.
Safety first must be a prime consideration.
