Staff deserve better

Dear Editor

As a relative of people that work at Cardigan Hospital, firstly, the staff were informed that they were losing their jobs, by face-book, saying jobs will be available at other hospitals 30 miles away. No matter if they have worked at the hospital one year or thirty four as some of them have, they deserved better than that. To be told before Christmas is an upset, but when were they actually going to tell them formally if it had not come out like this?

Only four beds remain in Cardigan. If the beds are being taken from our hospital to Tregaron 45 miles away how is that going to help our community? It could be a parent of a local person forced to travel a ninety mile round trip to Tregaron and back. There is currently a local family who have an elderly person in Carmarthen Hospital and they are desperate to bring her back to Cardigan but not allowed. My nan was in Cardigan Hospital toward the end of her life and I thank God I could see her as often as I did.

It needs to be made clear that the new hospital does not look like it will carry inpatient beds. They continue to talk about the new hospital but at present not a blade of grass has been disturbed nor a brick or block laid. It can take another three to four years to build even were it started immediately. That is no help to the staff who will be left without work here and now.

Local people should take pen to paper to the Tivyside and to the Hywel Dda. They are keeping some beds open until February during which time the people of Cardigan should prepare to fight our corner. Get your placards out! Show Hywel Dda what the hospital means to us! Don’t let them close our wards without a fight.
