THE full events-packed programme for this year’s Penfro Book Festival has been unveiled.

The popular festival based at Rhosygilwen, near Cilgerran, stretches over four days this year from Thursday, September 7 to Sunday, September 10.

The programme kicks off with an illustrated talk by Springwatch’s Iolo Williams looking at Wales’ Wild Places and showcasing the country’s stunning natural environments.

On the Friday, students from local performing arts group Dynamix present Ancient Tales of West Wales, performing tales from local folklore with scripts written by the students themselves.

Workshops for writers are being held throughout the day on Saturday with leading experts in their fields including dramatist Lucy Gannon, poet Susan Richardson, renowned Welsh poet Ceri Wyn Jones, poet Helen May Williams, fiction writer Hilary Shepherd and children’s writer Penny Thomas. Booking is essential for these workshops and places are limited.

Also on Saturday, Susan Richardson will be giving a poetry performance while the results of the Penfro 2017 competitions will be announced, plus an open mic session for poets.

Saturday evening sees author Lynne Truss, author of the global best-seller on punctuation ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’, take the stage. Lynne will be entertaining the audience with stories of rogue commas and elusive apostrophes as well as reading a monologue from her acclaimed radio series ‘A Certain Age’.

A selection of talks is on offer during the last day of the festival on Sunday. Writers Maggie Harris and Alex Barr talk to publisher Richard Davies about their need to keep telling stories while David Saunders talks about Ronald Lockley and his love of islands including beautiful Skomer.

Local author David Lloyd Owen will be talking about his new book A Wilder Wales – Travellers’ Tales 1610-1831 while political veteran Ann Clywd MP talks about her remarkable career. St David – the man and the myth is the title of the talk by Gerald Morgan, debunking a few myths along the way.

Sunday lunch is also on offer followed by the winners of the radio drama competition who will have their entries acted live on stage.

And finally to round off the festival, Rhosygilwen founder Glen Peters talks about his life and chooses five pieces of music and words that mean the most to him.
