THE new Young Musician of Dyfed will be giving a solo recital at St David’s Cathedral early next month as part of the Cathedral’s annual music festival.

Pianist Siriol Jenkins, a 17-year-old pupil at Ysgol y Preseli, won the title in April and will be performing a large range of solo piano works from Chopin to Rachmaninov, Bach to Debussy.

The concert takes place at 11am on Saturday, June 4.

Currently sitting her A-levels, Siriol from Wiseman’s Bridge, has her sights set on a career as a pianist and attends the Junior Conservatoire of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama every Saturday, where she has recently begun studying jazz piano in addition to classical.

But music has been in her fingertips since the age of seven when she first took up piano under her mother’s guidance.

Among her most recent successes is winning the Concerto Competition at the Junior Conservatoire, the prize for which offers her the opportunity to perform Schumann’s piano concerto with the college orchestra in concert in July.

She will also be giving a recital as part of the Winchester Festival next month.

Having won the title of Dyfed Young Musician 2016, she is proud to return to perform at the Cathedral Music Festival following her successful hour-long solo recital at the cathedral last year.

As well as performing she composes her own pieces and in 2015 was commissioned by the Young Composer of Dyfed project to write a work for violin and piano which was premiered with Molly-Rowan Sharples in October.

Awards in previous years include Most Outstanding Pianist at the Abertawe Festival of Young Musicians and winner of the Open Piano competition at the Valero Pembrokeshire Schools Music Festival.
