KNOWN for their eclectic mix of music including bluegrass, Americana, folk and swing as well as original songs, The Growling Old Men have fans everywhere they go.

Catch them at Burnett's Hill Chapel, Martletwy tonight, Wednesday, September 16, when they will be appearing with guest Ben Somers on bass.

The Growling Old Men are Ben Winship (mandolin and vocals) and John Lowell (guitar and vocals) who are both veterans of the Northern Rockies’ acoustic music world and have been performing and recording together since 1998. Their original and traditional bluegrass songs, ballads and tunes have been a hit at festivals, concerts and workshops from Canada to the Shetland Islands.

Their CDs are truly a joint effort with the lead singing, harmony, songwriting and picking duties shared throughout.

Ben Winship is a multi-instrumentalist and was a founding member of Loose Ties, with whom he performed from 1986 to 1996. In addition to the Growling Old Men, he also performs with Brother Mule, the Fishing Music Band and a local Dixieland band. Ben also runs a well-respected recording studio, the Henhouse.

John Lowell has been a stalwart of the Montana bluegrass scene for the past 25 years, fronting two of the region's finest bluegrass bands, Wheel Hoss and Kane’s River,

Ben is a saxophonist/bass player/singer living in the centre of London.

He writes and arranges music of his own, and for other musicians. Ben studied Jazz music more recently has taken to playing double bass, and has played with his heroes such as Dr John, Dirk Powell, Darol Anger and others.

He grew up around music with his father playing onstage for many US and UK Country Music stars such as Glen Campbell, Billie Jo Spears, Freddie Weller, Lonnie Donegan and more.
