AN EVENING featuring some of the greatest Russian music ever written is on offer at Rhosygilwen this week.

Founded in 1985, the St Petersburg Quartet is one of the most highly regarded chamber ensembles.

Their rise to fame has included a Grammy nomination, 'best record' honours in both Stereo Review and Gramophone, an opening night performance at Mostly Mozart at the Lincoln Center, a five-year residency at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and hundreds of concerts on many of North America, Europe and Asia's most prestigious series and festivals.

Their recent performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall was a sell out success and Rhosygilwen is pleased to present the quartet for its evening, The Full Russian.

There are three parts to the evening’s music which includes: Prokofiev Quartet 1; Tchaikovsky Quartet No 2; and Jewish Folk Tunes for a string quartet.

Before the performance, audiences will be treated to a talk by Anne Garside on the Russian Itinerant Painters. These are the works that are from the 19th century of Russian history, a period of great change and upheaval. They will provide a backdrop and understanding to the evening’s music.

The performance is at Rhosygilwen, near Cilgerran, on Sunday, May 17 at 7.30 pm and tickets (£15) are available online at Rhosygilwen.co.uk or by calling 01239 841387. Pre-concert suppers are also bookable by calling the same number.
