LOCAL singer-songwriter Lowri Evans will be the support for Irish singer Cara Dillon when she appears at Theatr Mwldan tonight, April, 30.

Nominated for Folk Singer of the Year in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, held last week at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, Cara Dillon is known for her beautiful voice and captivating songs.

She has earned both commercial success and critical acclaim, including previously the awards for Album of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and The Meteor Music Award for Best Irish Female.

Dillon has described herself as making music that reaches beyond the constraints and limitations of tradition: “To me, you can go anywhere with every song. The melody and message is at the forefront of everything I do. I don’t really care where the song came from, how old it is, and who did it first. It’s whether it strikes a note in my heart, does it haunt me, do I need to sing it?”

In the last five years she has taken time off to embrace motherhood and combat illness. But along with her husband and collaborator, Sam Lakeman (brother of Mercury nominated folk rocker Seth) she returned in 2014 with her fifth solo album, A Thousand Hearts.

Lowri Evans performs and writes a range of music from folk to country and blues and has been nominated for the Welsh Artist of the Year award.

She believes Thursday’s gig will be one to see.

“I have supported Cara twice before and she is an amazing musician. Please check her out and if you are nearby, come along to the gig,” she said.

Lowri has performed with artists such as Seth Lakeman and Martin Simpson, and undertook her first tour of the US in April last year.

She is currently working on her new album, which is due for release later this year.

Next month she will be plays at the Calan Mai Folk Days a the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea on May 2; at Tegaroc Festival, Tregaron on May 16 and at The Cross Inn, Clarbeston Road, Pembrokeshire, 7pm supporting Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards www.lauracortese.net
