Enjoy an evening of exquisite jazz and adventurous folk on Friday March 20 with Burum and SILD at Small World Theatre, Cardigan.

These two exceptional bands are set to reveal their extensive knowledge of traditional Welsh music in their latest material. This night is also a farewell party for SILD's Sille and Martin who are moving to Estonia and onto new adventures.

Burum blends Welsh folk songs with modern jazz, fusing a deep respect for original folk melodies with the flexibility and dynamics of jazz improvisation. Beautiful, melancholic melodies are performed alongside fiery solos and some deep grooves. The toured India in 2014, as well as playing to a packed house at the Brecon Jazz Festival. In reviewing the Brecon concert Access All Areas Music said ‘Burum are flexible in improvising and interpreting existing material, making it new, magical and extraordinary. Their name means ‘yeast’ and, indeed, what they keep is a fresh and heady fermenting brew of music…The band is timeless, creative and a little bit different’. Burum comprises Tomos Williams (trumpet), Daniel Williams (tenor sax), Ceri Rhys Matthews (pipes and flute), Dave Jones (piano), Mark O’Connor (drums) and Aidan Thorne (bass).

SILD brings fiddle and hiiu-kannel (Estonian bowed lyre) player Sille Ilves and innovative Welsh guitarist Martin Leamon to the stage. Strikingly original, Sille’s use of different tunings on fiddle and hiiu kannel sends the Estonian tradition in adventurous new directions and finds new soundscapes in traditional Welsh melodies. Her natural voice is perfectly complimented by Martin`s intimate & inventive guitar playing. ‘SILD were one of the finds of our festival: fascinating material, exquisite artistry – and real human warmth too’ Tim Healey, Director, Oxford Folk Festival.

The door and bar are open at 7.30pm and £10 tickets can be bought online smallworld.org.uk.
