Deeply rooted in Zoroastrian traditions, Nowruz meaning "New Day”, has been celebrated by Iranians for at least 3,000 years to mark the start of Spring.

Help WOW Wales One World Film Festival celebrate Nowruz, Iranian New Year, at Small World Theatre in Cardigan on March 28 with a sumptuous Persian feast prepared by Jen Goss of ‘Our Two Acres’ and a screening of Abbas Kiarostami’s classic film, Where Is My Friend's Home?

Winning four prizes at Locarno International Film Festival in 1989, Where Is My Friend's Home? launched Iran’s most famous director Abbas Kiarostami onto the world stage, heralded the arrival of a generation of Iranian film directors who changed the face of world cinema, and set the prototype for Iranian "kid quest" movies.

Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Rakshan Banietemad, Bahman Ghobadi, Jafar Panahi and Samira Makhmalbaf made up a generation of globally acclaimed Iranian filmmakers who won prizes at festivals across the world. Visually striking, rich in symbolism and full of wonder their films provided a glimpse of a rapidly changing Iran to Western audiences. A deceptively simple gem, Where Is My Friend's Home? has the rigour and haunting resonance of Kiarostami’s best work.

Before the film, Jen Goss will be serving a Persian New Year Feast of herbed rice with fish, Lima beans with eggs & dill, salad-e shirazi, persian carrot salad, persian barbari flatbreads, honey soaked pastries and mint tea for a very reasonable £10 per head.

There will also be a display of Persian carpets that have been imported direct from Iran by Tribal Rugs of Narberth.

We will be laying out a traditional New Year Haft Seen table with seven specific items symbolising health, wisdom and happiness - Seeb (apple), Sabze (green grass), Serke (vinegar), Samanoo (a meal made out of wheat), Senjed (a special kind of berry), Sekke (a coin), and Seer (garlic).

Festival Director David Gillam said: “Come and enjoy a magic carpet ride that will transport you across the world to celebrate Nowruz with a Persian Feast and one of my favourite Iranian movies. I can promise you it will be a hugely enjoyable evening quite unlike anything Cardigan has ever seen before.”
