Narberth is gearing up for the return of one Wales’ most unique festivals, the Narberth A Cappella Voice Festival, hosted by Span Arts, February 20 to 22.

The only festival of its kind in Wales, Narberth Voice Festival draws people from all over the UK to celebrate the great diversity of singing without instruments.

Featuring traditional and non-traditional a cappella artists, the festival has gained huge popularity over its seven years, with packed workshops and sold out audiences, and a rich variety of world-class acts such as the Swingle Singers, London Bulgarian Choir, female beatboxing quintet The Boxettes, and the South African Male Zulu Choir.

This year is no exception, with everything from gospel to beatbox, and eastern European to Mongolian throat singing on the line-up. Something for everyone and more in between.

Marking the triumphant return in 2015, the magnificent Black Voices, have gained the reputation as Europe’s finest female a cappella quintet, and have previously performed in front of the British Royal Family, Pope John Paul ll and Nelson Mandela, and opened the festival in 2009.

Drawing inspiration from the rich black oral tradition, Black Voices have developed a unique repertoire and arrangement of spirituals, traditional African, Caribbean and English folk songs, jazz, gospel, pop and reggae, as well as a fusion of contemporary and classical styles.

Also on the line-up is legendary singer and practitioner Frankie Armstrong, “Rightly regarded as one of British Folk music’s most distinctive and respected singers”, and Michael Ormiston, UK’s most experienced Mongolian Khöömii singer, who will be demonstrating the magnificence of overtone and undertone singing.

Stunning upper-voice choir Enkelit headline Saturday night, celebrating the melancholic lyricism of the beautiful and contemporary a cappella music of Finland.

Also on the menu is Grace Savage, twice crowned UK Beatbox Champion showcasing her jaw-dropping looping techniques, and extraordinary 12-piece vocal group Original Sing, with an eclectic repertoire of contemporary music.

The Sunday lunchtime concert features exquisite female choir Bella Voce, hailing from Haverfordwest, who will be performing a unique joint programme with charismatic Welsh folk singer Sioned Haf Wyn Llewelyn in the beautiful St Andrews Church, Narberth.

There are seven workshops to choose from over the weekend, including Black Voices, Enkelit and Frankie Armstrong, Susie Ro Prater and Michael Ormiston offering a range of genres such as gospel, Bulgarian, Georgian and overtone and undertone singing. Plus the popular free pop-up choir, the Big Sing.
