Theatr Gwaun, is offering up a package of futuristic delights, all in top quality digital prints, as part of the British Film Institute’s ground-breaking science fiction festival, December 12 to 14.

Coming off the back of the theatre’s showing of Interstellar (until December 4) and running alongside The Hobbit (December 12 to 24), there’s a real variety from this wide genre on offer.

On Friday December 12 at 7.30pm, the classic 1968 Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey (U) kicks things off. With its haunting soundtrack and sweeping visuals, if ever there was a film made for the big screen, this is it.

Spend Saturday afternoon (December 13 at 2.30pm) experiencing sci fi of a very different kind, with the high camp classic 1980 version of Flash Gordon (PG). As Dale Arden (and Queen) memorably said “Flash, I love you, but we’ve only got 24 hours to save the universe!”

That evening brings a film that defines cult classic – Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent masterpiece Metropolis (PG) portrays a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the planners – a theme that rings true today, almost 90 years later.

And to round off the weekend, Nic Roeg’s captivating The Man Who Fell To Earth (18) stars David Bowie as the alien who needs to save his dying planet. Showing on December 14 at 7.30pm, this is a quiet, disturbing film – the antithesis of intergalactic battles and special effects, and a fitting way to round of a weekend of fear and wonder.

Science fiction is sometimes described not so much as a genre as a location, as the style, content and message of films defined as sci fi is so diverse. Theatr Gwaun’s Days Of Fear And Wonder is a taste of what it can achieve – and a celebration of its scope as much much more than superheroes.
