Richard Eyre’s mesmerising production of Carmen, Bizet’s steamy melodrama screens at Mwldan, Cardigan on Tuesday 4 November, with mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili singing her signature role of the ill-fated gypsy temptress. Aleksandrs Antonenko plays her desperate lover, the soldier Don José, and Ildar Abdrazakov is the swaggering bullfighter, Escamillo, who comes between them.
Based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, Carmen is without doubt one of the most alluring, popular and well-known operas ever written. A byword for passion and intoxication, Carmen is a deadly cocktail of desire and devastation. Bizet’s romantic tragedy returns to Live in HD
with an outstanding cast starring the 30 year old Anita Rachvelishvili, and led by Spanish conductor, Pablo Heras-Casado. Hailed for uncovering ‘the rawness and daring at the opera’s core’, Richard Eyre’s production was first seen in New York in 2009. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the irresistible score, which features one beloved and instantly recognisable melody after another.
Tickets for Carmen are £16 (£15), and can be booked online or via mobile by visiting www.mwldan.co.uk, or directly with Mwldan’s box office 01239 621 200.
